Landscape Accessories Series: Seating
After you’ve done all of the work to create a beautiful garden, don’t forget to set up spaces to sit back and enjoy it. Seating can be purely functional, creating a place to stop and enjoy some shade or a beautiful view, but it can also help to reflect the mood you are attempting to establish. Your seating should complement the style of your landscape, so think beyond cheap plastic chairs by using these ideas to inspire you to add some unique spaces to your own landscape.
Rustic Wood: If you have a rustic garden, shady woodland, or a flowing meadow, consider using materials like wood for seating. You may be able to repurpose logs or planks that are laying around from other projects. You can use a protective coating to help them last longer, or simply let them age in the weather knowing you may need to replace them eventually. Straightforward and easy as pie!
Stone and Cement: A good foundation is key for stone to support the weight of these heavy materials to ensure they will not tip or collapse. Once in place, you have little to no maintenance seating that will last the test of time. They may not be a spot to lounge, but they are perfect to stop and enjoy a stunning view.
Wood Seating: Wood benches and chairs may require some upkeep, but they make comfortable seating that has an ecological connection with nature. You can choose from multiple types of wood and finishes and infinite styles. You can even build or paint them yourself to create a garden treasure worthy or passing on.
Metal Seating: With simple finishes, metal benches can hold up for years without additional care. You can find many styles available for relatively inexpensive prices too! The shapes and colors can bring a lot of whimsy to the garden. Some have a combination of wood and metal merging comfort and strength.
Make it Comfortable: No matter the materials, people won't want to use your seating if it's uncomfortable. You may need to add cushions, pillows, or other accessories that make the seating cozy and inviting. Be sure to choose materials that are weather-resistant and durable like Sunbrella fabrics. Remember too that seating isn’t limited to beaches or chairs. Comfy sofas, swings, or hammocks can be wonderful places to read a book or take a refreshing outdoor nap.
